Description

The Eastern Veil Nebula is only a small part of a much larger nebulous complex. The entire complex is classified as a supernova remnant, which is an expanding cloud born from the death of a super massive star. This nebula contains a variety of small tendrils and rope-like filaments that were formed from the shock of the supernova. Most astronomers suspect that we (from earth) are viewing this nebula "edge-on" which contributes to the "thin" appearance of the gas.

The Eastern Veil is located in the constellation Cygnus some 1470 light years distant. It is estimated that the supernova responsible for the creation of this complex occurred about 6,500 years ago.
